Empowering Tomorrow’s Engineers

Collaboration Between EngineeringUK and NSAN

EngineeringUK and NSAN recognise that the skills challenges can only be tackled through collaboration. NSAN hold a reciprocal membership with EngineeringUK, a partnership that is a vehicle for drawing into the nuclear sector insights and best practice from the wider STEM industries.

EngineeringUK is leading efforts to grow the collective impact of all engineering and technology inspiration and careers activities with young people of school age.

Launching their new five-year strategy in September 2023, EngineeringUK’s Chief Executive Dr Hilary Leevers said:

“We have made it our mission to enable young people from all backgrounds to be informed, inspired and progress into engineering and technology. We can only achieve this by working in partnership.” 1
Benefits to collaboration

Like NSAN, EngineeringUK is hard wired to collaborate. Their links with NSAN go deep, with collaborations happening at strategic, policy and operational levels. NSAN’s Client Relationship Manager Alli Hunt attends EngineeringUK’s quarterly Business and Industry Panel meetings, which have proven to be a valuable source of not only insights, but also connections that Alli can then share with NSAN members.

“They are great meetings, and we get to hear about the work EngineeringUK are doing in the STEM landscape, and the research they pull together which is useful for us as NSAN, and a lot of our companies who like to know what’s going on in the world of STEM”.

A recent example of the cross-sector pollination that occurs as a result of this collaboration is after seeing National Grid talk about their apprenticeship programme and how they protect their trainees, Alli was then “able to share the messages from that presentation to member companies that are starting their journey on safeguarding.”

EngineeringUK has in turn been introduced to NSAN’s members, one of whom, Co Lab Engineering2, have already signed up to join The Tomorrow’s Engineers Code; a community of more than 300 members working toward common goals to increase the diversity and number of young people entering engineering and technology careers.

What does great collaboration look like?

Corporate Partnerships Manager Jane Campbell meets one of NSAN’s Client Relationship Managers Alli Hunt every 4-6 weeks so both remain in tune with one another. Jane and Beatrice Barleon (Head of Policy and Public Affairs at EngineeringUK) attended NSAN’s Empowering Collaboration event in September 2023, where they provided early sight of the key findings from the Willetts and Knight Inquiry into Engineering Apprenticeships.3

Jane says:
“NSAN is one of only a select few to hold a reciprocal membership. These are organisations that are aligned with and support our mission. They share our belief in what we are trying to achieve; to attract a larger, more diverse future workforce.
Alli is a fantastic advocate for The Code and really great to work with. Success from this collaboration is much more than growing membership, it’s bringing more organisations together to collaborate and sharing our research and resources to benefit STEM businesses. It’s exciting, the more we do, the more different ways to work together we discover.”
