NSAN welcomes Rolls-Royce SMR’s Landmark Achievement
Advancing Nuclear Energy in the UK
NSAN welcomed today the government announcement of the selection of NSAN Member, Rolls-Royce SMR as the preferred bidder to partner with Great British Energy – Nuclear to develop small modular reactors, backing one of Europe’s first Small Modular Reactor programmes. This includes a commitment of £2.5 billion for the overall small modular reactor programme in this Spending Review period, potentially supporting up to 3,000 new skilled jobs.
Today’s announcement viewed alongside recently announced R&D investments in fusion energy represents the most ambitious nuclear programme seen in decades.
When Small Modular Reactors, Sizewell C, and Hinkley Point C come online in the 2030s, they will collectively deliver more nuclear energy to the grid than the previous half-century combined.
Tricia Austin, Managing Director of NSAN commented;
“We would like to congratulate Rolls Royce SMR on this landmark announcement. Delivering this ambitious programme will create unprecedented demand for skilled workers and related opportunities in the supply chain. NSAN, working collaboratively with our employer and provider networks, will play a key role in meeting this skills challenge.”
