Nuclear Bursary Open for Applications
The Nuclear Bursary Scheme aims to provide financial support to individuals looking to pursue or grow their career in nuclear.
This round of the Nuclear Bursary[1] has a particular focus on skills development for a green economic recovery, particularly focussing on the UK’s ambitious programme to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. We therefore particularly welcome
applications from individuals whose roles might be at risk within carbon intensive industries, and who are looking to transition into nuclear.
Applications are also invited from:
- Individuals, who work in nuclear, that have been furloughed or have been made redundant due to the pandemic who wish to upskill to continue their career in nuclear.
- SMEs in the nuclear supply chain who are looking for support in meeting the skills challenge within their business.
- Individuals looking to undertake training/upskill for a position that has been identified as a skills gap in the industry.
The Nuclear Bursary Scheme, managed by NSAN and funded by the NDA and ECITB, supports the delivery of several of the NSSG’s[2] key Skills Strategy themes including supporting apprenticeships, transferability and exciting the next generation.
The Bursary also contributes to the delivery of the Nuclear Sector Deal, which aims to improve the productivity and competitiveness of the UK nuclear supply chain, reduce barriers to entry and encourage SMEs to enter the sector.
The Bursary can be used to support placements, internships, secondments and programmes of study relevant to the sector, providing a contribution towards the cost of the course.
Jo Tipa, Managing Director of NSAN, commented:
“The nuclear industry is an important part of the government’s plan to reach net zero emissions by 2050. One of the objectives of this Bursary round is to offer support to individuals who may be at risk in more carbon intensive industries who are interested in transitioning into nuclear. Alongside this, the bursary is also seeking to support people impacted within our industry by the current pandemic by not only contributing to their personal development, but by hopefully providing a stepping-stone, through training/upskilling, to a continued career in the nuclear sector. In these uncertain times, it is great to be able to offer financial support for training and we would like to thank the NDA and ECITB for their continuation of funding for the Bursary.
As the go-to-place for skills for nuclear, NSAN is committed to providing support to the nuclear industry through this difficult period.”
Corhyn Parr, Chair of NSSG, commented:
“The NSSG remain committed to supporting individuals and organisations in their ongoing development, and given the exceptional circumstances we continue to find ourselves in, we feel it is appropriate to prioritise applications to those who are most affected by the crisis, and to target upskilling/reskilling into nuclear as part of a green economic recovery. The NSSG overall objective is to support the timely attraction, development and retention of a diverse workforce and supply chain. The continued support from the NDA, NSAN and the ECITB in delivering bursaries is very much appreciated during these challenging times.”
Jacq Longrigg, Group Head of Capability & Capacity of the NDA, commented:
“We acknowledge that this is a period of uncertainty, however we have to continue to deliver the decommissioning mission for the UK, this means that we need a pipeline of skilled individuals at all levels and across our supply chain, if you have been affected financially by Covid 19 but have the opportunity to continue with your training or enhance your skills over the coming months we would encourage you to do so. We are committed to supporting individuals and small businesses in developing your capability and capacity through skills development and encourage you to apply for the financial support we can offer through the bursary scheme.”
Chris Claydon, CEO of ECITB, commented:
“Throughout the pandemic the ECITB has worked to support employers, learners and training providers to continue vital workplace skills development.
“Our commitment to the Nuclear bursary provides immediate support for talented new entrants embarking on engineering construction careers and is an investment in the future of the engineering construction industry.”
The deadline for applications: 9th April 2021 (4pm)
