End Point Assessment
Following the apprenticeship reforms announced in 2017, all apprenticeship standards require End Point Assessment (EPA) to confirm that an apprentice has achieved the occupational competence set out in the standard. This EPA must be carried out by an independent organisation that is listed on the government’s Register of Apprentice Assessment Organisations (RoAAO).

The NSAN Apprentice Assessment Organisation (AAO) offers a nuclear specific and focussed approach that is fully aligned to Employer Trailblazer Group process and expectations. NSAN engages and works with a range of Professional Institutes (PIs) and Awarding Organisations to provide expertise in the methods of assessment used for EPA. By working closely with PIs, this also enables apprentices to consider membership of professional bodies to gain mentoring support for their future continuous professional development.
Employers should hold 20% of the apprentice’s funding to pay for the EPA. This is a standard across all apprenticeships.
What is an End Point Assessment (EPA)?
The EPA is part of the biggest apprenticeship reforms in recent times, and will constitute a large part of the new Trailblazer approach.
The EPA is designed to confirm that an apprentice has gained the required knowledge, skills and behaviours for a particular occupation and can perform the occupational role.
When does an apprentice undertake the EPA?
The EPA is completed once the apprenticeship training has been completed. It is a mandatory and final step before an apprenticeship certificate can be issued.
Is the EPA the same for all apprenticeship standards?
The format of the EPA varies between standards. The Employer Trailblazer Group that develops a particular standard and EPA Plan determines the best methods of assessment to use to confirm occupational competence. The AAO that can offer delivery of the EPA must follow the methods of assessment identified in the EPA Plan.
What is the cost of EPA?
The funding provided by government for an apprenticeship is to help cover the cost of on-programme training delivered by a provider and EPA delivered by an AAO. When the employer agrees the cost of an apprenticeship with a provider, 20% of the government funding is held back to cover the cost of EPA. The actual cost of EPA for a particular apprenticeship is agreed between the employer and the AAO, and will include such factors as volume of apprentices requiring EPA, the methods of assessment and independent assessors required for the delivery and the location and venue. Once the cost of EPA has been agreed, the employer will advise their provider, and the provider is required to put in place contractual arrangements for the EPA delivery with the AAO selected by the Employer.
When should an employer select the AAO for the EPA of an apprenticeship standard?
It is important that employers are familiar with the requirements of EPA when they decide on a particular apprenticeship standard they wish to use. By employers giving an AAO early indication that they wish to use their services for EPA, this will help to ensure that the EPA can be planned and scheduled to meet the timescales required for the timely completion of an apprenticeship. This also helps the AAO to forecast volumes of apprentices and the resource capability required.
