Diversity & Inclusion in Recruitment
There are many challenges to be faced by the Nuclear industry over the coming years in order to meet the 2030 vision of the Nuclear Sector Deal. The deal sets a target of 40% of women in nuclear by 2030 (currently 22%) and to replace the expertise of an ageing workforce, with 1/5 of the current workforce over the age of 55. These challenges offer the industry a great opportunity to create a balance of gender diversity and to attract new people to the sector from underrepresented groups such as LGBT+, BAME and disabled. As an industry we know these underrepresented groups need greater access to jobs and careers in nuclear and as such, by ensuring there is a more inclusive culture it will help to recruit and retain a diverse workforce.
In order to drive forward diversity and inclusion in recruitment, companies need to consider how they advertise job opportunities. The language and imagery used is key to ensuring it appeals to people from a broad range of backgrounds. Equally as an industry we need to ensure we ‘brand’ ourselves to enable us to excite the next generation and attract and retain talent to meet current and future skills demands.
Companies with employees from a broad range of backgrounds have been found to outperform companies with a less diverse background. By recruiting individuals from a range of backgrounds to all levels, businesses acquire a range of perspectives and viewpoints. In addition, a diverse workforce can improve the bottom line of a business, lead to happier and more productive teams and drive innovation.
In order to reap the benefits of a diverse workforce employers must ensure they have a robust recruitment, selection and retention strategy in place.
NSAN are currently developing an end-to-end recruitment service to support companies working in the nuclear industry. We have launched a new Job Site to help employers promote their opportunities. Click here for more information on how employers can use this site to promote their vacancies.
